Palm Springs Winter Playground, Vintage Postcard

There are any number for reasons to visit the Coachella valley, from the annual, internationally renowned music festival, the high-class shopping, to the year-round excellence of the golf courses in Palm Springs. There is positively no shortage of things to do.

No matter your reason, take a quick glance at this brief list of the nine different towns in the valley. You may just discover a new favorite!

Palm Springs

Perhaps best known as an escape for 20th century celebrities, Palm Springs prides itself on its upkeep of the spirit of its original inhabitants, the Cahuilla Indians.

The top-tier spas and resorts have made this town a destination for any traveler, international or not. All year long, you can find activities and events for all interests. One of the most well-known events, aside from the hip music festivals, is the Palm Springs International Film festival.

Cathedral City

The drawing factor for Cathedral city certainly emanates from the numerous independent shops and restaurants.

The diversity and uniqueness of the establishments alone will provide you with enough options for months. There is even an attraction for sports lovers here, at the Big-League Dreams Sports Park, whose baseball diamonds resemble the iconic stadiums of Major League Baseball.

Rancho Mirage

If you’re looking for one of the most upscale, well-to-do cities in any desert around the globe, look no further than Rancho Mirage.

Eighty percent of its homes reside within gated communities. A whole host of celebrities own property in the area, and there is a casino right in the heart that provides 24-hour entertainment. And if you’re looking for even more world class shopping, head down to The River at Rancho Mirage to spend the days finding that perfect hat for the Californian sun.

Palm Desert

This city is perhaps the most interesting because it’s considered the geographical center of the oasis communities.

It also has some of the best desert views in the area, and it only rains fifteen days a year on average. However, Palm Desert is not only an oasis center, but an intellectual one as well. It’s home to three different college campuses: College of the Desert; Cal State San Bernardino; and UC Riverside. El Paseo is great shopping, but there’s fun for family and friends alike at The Living Desert Zoo and Botanical Garden, which is comprised of the different plants and animals of the desert.

Indian Wells

As far as vacationing in this city, it is more known for its attraction as a retirement community for well-off pensioners. In fact, with the right I.D., retirees and residents enjoy a vast supply of amenities and perks around the town.

Have no fear, though, there are a few things to do! The Living Desert Zoo spills over from Palm desert into the city, and The Indian Wells Tennis Garden hosts both the BNP Paribas Open and the Indian Wells Arts Festival.

La Quinta

No, this isn’t the chain of cheap hotel rooms which carry the same namesake, for this quaint town sits in the Santa Rosa mountains, and you’ll never find a La Quinta with such a beautiful backdrop. This is a quiet area of the valley, perhaps best known for La Quinta Resort and Club, and the numerous top-tier golf courses dotted throughout.

However, pay a visit to La Quinta Museum for a brush with history and travel information.

Indio

This is easily the fastest growing section of the Coachella Valley.

The influx of residents and business as a direct result of the growing popularity of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, as well as the Stagecoach Music Festival, have made this town an important factor for the entire valley. But, the town offers numerous different festivals and events all year, such as the Riverside County Fair, and National Date Festival, which millions of others flock to.

No matter what time you decide to check it out, you’ll find something to do.

Desert Hot Springs

Despite the numerous spas and resorts throughout the valley, Desert Hot Springs is the center of California’s spa and resort circuit.

Natural hot springs heat water from below ground, and as a result have been able to facilitate over two dozen different spas for your pleasure. Plus, the town is very near to Joshua Tree National Park, and it sits elevated for some of the best views in the valley.

Bermuda Dunes

Bermuda is more of a residential community than anything else, with a population of just over seven thousand. The estate style homes are a perfect scenic drive for a Sunday, and the local golf club is world-renowned as well.

The area is also well-known for horse breeders and stables, and even aviation as a hobby. Catch a tour of the entire valley from up above the clouds!
