Located in the Palm Canyon Mesa, this unique community was established in a caldera that provides the neighborhood with protection from the desert winds. The Mesa boasts a distinct collection of high-end architectural homes that are secluded, yet only minutes away from downtown Palm Springs.
The Mesa is one of South Palm Springs' oldest neighborhoods. It was established in the early 1920s by Edmond Fulford who envisioned The Mesa real estate as an exclusive gated community that could be entered through a common main entrance. The lowest hills of the San Jacinto Mountains were the perfect setting, as the community would remain private and be shielded from the arid desert winds. Fulford's vision was never fulfilled; however, the historic Gatehouse between South Palm Canyon and El Portal remains today to commemorate his dream.
So what makes The Mesa so special today? A diverse mix of people are happy who call this charming neighborhood home. This little community has a reputation of having a family-friendly atmosphere. Residents ride their bikes and walk throughout the community to run errands or simply to enjoy the lovely weather and awe-inspiring setting. The Mesa homes for sale offer a broad range of eclectic and innovative architectural styles including Spanish Colonial villas, adobe homes, and more recently, Santa Fe style homes.
Each of the premier luxury homes in The Mesa neighborhood has its own unique style. Some may feature adobe walls, stone floors, and rough-hewn wooden beams. Others may boast lavish terra cotta tile work, corrugated red roofs, and spacious outdoor living spaces. What remains paramount is that these homes are the type where you can't help but feel comfortable—the kind where you kick off your shoes at the door and pad around in bare feet. These homes express a sense of relaxation and foster a connection to nature and the surrounding environment.
Priced in the mid $600,000s to well over $4 million, The Mesa has a unique blend of old Palm Springs with a balanced blend of new. The Mesa has something for everyone on a search for a home in an exclusive, upscale community.
The Mesa Community Lifestyle and Amenities
The Mesa was once known to have been home to the stars. The infamous Joseph Cotton manor hosted notables such as Natalie Wood, Lloyd Bridges, and Kirk Douglas. Up the hill is the historical Ship of the Desert, which was owned by fashion designer Trina Turk. You may even run into Barry Manilow as he has lived in The Mesa for many years.
The Mesa has always been a popular location in Palm Springs. Its popularity dates back over a century when pioneers settled in Old Las Palmas, Andreas Hills, Chino Canyon, and the Tahquitz Canyons.
The Tahquitz Canyon loop is a short but spiritual two-mile hike along the peaceful Tahquitz River, leading up to the spectacular sixty-foot Tahquitz Falls. The canyon plays a particularly important role in the creation of Native American myth. Legend has it that the powerful shaman, Tahquitz, was banished to the canyon after misusing his power. It is said that his spirit still lives in this canyon, with strange rumblings heard deep within the San Jacinto Mountains as he stomps about the canyon.
Just walking distance away from The Mesa is the historic Moorten Botanical Garden which boasts a variety of three thousand desert plants. This intimate garden remains a family-owned and operated business and even sells plants similar to the ones that are featured, which is perfect for adding your own personal touch to your new home in The Mesa, Palm Springs.
